9/11 Day
Join the 9/11 Tribute Movement Today! The September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance ("9/11 Day") was originally founded in 2002 by two friends David Paine and Jay Winuk, with the support of many 9/11 leaders. David and Jay (who lost his brother Glenn Winuk, a rescue EMT, on 9/11), were inspired by the remarkable spirit of unity that arose in response to the attacks, and the desire to create a permanent and positive tribute in the name of the 9/11 victims and the many who rose in service. In 2003 David and Jay formed the nonprofit MyGoodDeed Inc, to work to secure federal recognition of 9/11 as a federally-recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. From 2003 to 2008, MyGoodDeed successfully built participation in the initiative, documenting more than one million good deeds posted from all 50 states and 165 countries. In 2009, at the urging of MyGoodDeed and many within the 9/11 community, President Barack Obama formally designated September 11 as a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance, following Congressional passage of bipartisan legislation authorizing this action. In 2010, MyGoodDeed and the HandsOn Network, the nation's leading volunteer service organization, joined together, along with the 9/11 Memorial, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, AARP, and the Mission Continues, to launch current plans to organize the largest day of service and remembrance in U.S. history in observance of the 2011 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Thousands of nonprofit organizations, employers and schools have signed up to participate. The goal is to encourage individuals throughout America and the world to join together again in observance of 9/11 and pledge to perform good deeds, volunteer, and engage in other forms of charitable service to help individuals and organizations in need. To join this historic Tribute, please "like" this Facebook fan page, invite your friends to like it as well, and visit http://911day.org/. 100% of the funding is privately raised thanks to generous contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations including American Express, GlaxoSmithKline, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Best Buy, Target, Clear Channel, and many others.
